Book Recommendation: The British Booksellers by Kristy Cambron
Title: The British Booksellers
Author: Kristy Cambron*
Published: April 9, 2024
Pages: 381
Genre: Historical Romance
Setting: Conventry, England, 1914, 1940
What happens when a tenant farmer's son falls in love with a British aristocrat, but she marries one of her own station?
As a young man, Amos Darby dared to dream of a future with Charlotte Terrington, the daughter of an earl. Their secret friendship blossomed until the harsh realities of the Great War shatters their youthful dreams. Fast forward to a quarter of a century later, and a battle-scarred Amos runs a bookshop across the street from his childhood sweetheart.
Charlotte and Amos don't marry as planned, but instead she reluctantly weds the future Earl of Harcourt. When her husband is killed in the Great War, she must raise her daughter and run her late husband's estate alone. The one thing she does for herself is open a bookstore. The problem: its competition is the bookshop Amos owns across the street.
With the threat of war with Hitler looming, Charlotte and her daughter Eden strive to protect the Harcourt estate and legacy. When an American solicitor threatens the estate with a lawsuit, they must fight to preserve what they’ve worked so hard to build. Amidst the devastation of the Coventry Blitz, Amos and Charlotte must set aside their differences and unite to help their community survive.
Kristy Cambron creates a split-time historical romance with authentic, interesting characters, and I was impressed by the well-researched setting. The story of a love that endures heartbreak and two wars, however, is what kept me turning the page.
