What happens when a heartbroken young woman leaves her hometown to visit two quirky aunts only to find her pesky childhood nemesis is a neighbor? Charlotte Eliason promises herself never to fall in love again—not after she was cheated on by the man she expected to marry. With some encouragement from her mother, she takes the train to visit her two spinster aunts who try to throw her together with the town’s new blacksmith. However, he’s the last person she wants to spend time with. Tobias Hallman moved to Prune Creek to establish a blacksmithing business. But his quiet life is upended when the vexing Charlotte moves to town and her meddlesome aunts keep inviting him to supper. Who can refuse a free home cooked meal? Charlotte and Tobias forge a tentative friendship and find they get along much better now they are adults. When Tobias’s brother and sister-in-law die during an influenza outbreak, Tobias takes in their orphaned daughter. Charlotte adores the five-year-old Lanie. She also finds her defenses cracking for the blacksmith, and she vows to help Tobias do whatever it takes to keep the little girl. I thoroughly enjoyed this story! I liked the main characters right away and found myself rooting for them, especially Tobias—even though he'd been a terror to Charlotte as a boy. This enmity to love has a bit of a twist in that the animosity started when they were children. But honestly, who among us didn't secretly like the boy who pulled our pigtails, despite our loud protestations? What I loved:
