Series: Texas Ever After #1 Pages: 351, Kindle Edition Genre: Historical Christian Romance Setting: Bosque County, Texas 1892 A retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Texas style… Penelope Snow, an orphan who works for a famous actress, loses her position when her employer becomes jealous of Penelope’s beauty. Tied up and left to die in the wilderness by the actress’s henchman, she is rescued by a Texas Ranger and a group of seven grandfatherly men who live on the Diamond D Ranch. Titus Kingsley, the ambitious Texas Ranger, distrusts beautiful women ever since his brother lost his life over a treacherous one. And he's concerned about Penelope's motives. Is she who she says she is? Narcissa LaBelle (great name!) is the evil, narcissistic actress who steals from theater patrons and wants Penelope dead. I found the story a clever page-turner, laced with humor and suspense. As with all Witemeyer’s books, there are references to faith and Scripture throughout. The themes of trust and ties that bind (even non-familial ones) shine and the author layers her story with memorable characters. She made the unique and bold decision to present the antagonist’s point of view in addition to those of the two main characters. Some scenes with Narcissa are a bit edgy for a Christian romance, but Witemeyer makes it work. Fairest of Heart is an entertaining read. And its cover is lovely. * You can find out more about Karen on her website: www.karenwitemeyer.com |
